Ine's 230 funaya boathouses were never designed for tourism. Built between the Edo period and early Showa era, these two-storey timber structures straddle the water's edge, their ground floors opening directly onto Ine Bay to shelter fishing boats, their upper floors serving as living quarters and net-drying lofts.
